If you haven’t watched One Night in Miami yet, I have a quick question to ask you: WYD??? The film tells the story of what happened in 1964 before and after Cassius Clay (aka Muhammad Ali) defeats opponent Sonny Liston. It sees Cassius chilling, debating, and shooting the sh*t with footballer Jim Brown, activist Malcom X, and singer Sam Cooke. If you need further incentive to hop on board—you know, ahead of this year’s Oscars—just know that Leslie Odom Jr. plays the role of Sam and scored a Best Original Song nod for the amazing job he did on the movie’s big song, “Speak Now.”

According to Leslie, the film’s producers “were always very interested in whomever was cast as Sam [being] the person that would write the song for the movie. That they would take that experience of Sam and then [write a song]. Because the task was so great, we wrote four different songs.” (Songwriter Sam Ashworth wrote majority of the song alongside Leslie and is also nominated for an Academy Award for the track.)

“Speak Now” ended up being the best song of the bunch. When it came time to record, the actor told Entertainment Weekly that “because I spent the whole film trying to come as close to Sam Cooke as possible, we wanted to make sure that enough time had passed. That Sam had kind of left me, and I was feeling like myself again, so that this could be what sounds like me hopefully.”

In Leslie’s opinion, the song is able to resonate with its listeners because “it sounded like: ‘Listen, your time is precious and you’re not guaranteed a lot of it, so speak right now in this moment. Use your life, use everything that you are given, to make a change and to make a difference right in this moment.’” Now that’s a great song meaning if I’ve ever heard one!

[Verse 1]
Listen, listen
While the storm in your heart is raging
Listen, listen, listen
Listen, listen
To the echoes of the martyrs praying
Listen, listen, listen

[Pre-Chorus]

Listen, brothers and sisters
Listen, listen, listen
I swear we’ll never find a way to where we’re going all alone
Don’t take your eyes off the road

[Chorus]

Can you hear the bells ring out?
Speak now
Speak now
Can you hear the angels singin’ loud?
Speak now
Speak now

[Verse 2]

Listen, listen
To the message of hope in the whispers of ghosts
Listen, listen, listen
Listen, listen
For the children will grow on the seeds that we sew
They listen, listen, listen

[Pre-Chorus]

Listen, listen
Brothers and sisters
Listen, listen, listen
I swear we’ll never find our way to where we’re going, all alone
(On our own)
Don’t take your eyes off the road

[Chorus]

Can you hear the bells ring out?
Speak now
Speak now
Can you hear the angels singin’ loud?
Speak now
Speak now
